5 Tips For Feeling Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

5 Tips To Help You Relax In Front Of The Camera

Having your photo taken by a professional photographer can be intimidating. It’s normal to feel uncomfortable in front of the camera, but there are ways to work through it and produce beautiful photos while having fun! Here are five tips for feeling comfortable in front of the camera.

  1. Get to know your photographerBefore you start taking pictures, ask questions and get to know the person behind the lens. The trick is to relax and be yourself but, as soon as you give someone that advice, the funny thing is, they tense up. So I try to never say that to my clients. You should feel comfortable enough with your photographer that you can be yourself in front of them. The trick to that is just simple conversation. Let the photographer get to know you, ask questions and get to know them. The better you connect, the better the pictures will be.
  2. Choose a location that makes you feel relaxed. If you choose an outdoor location, pick a spot where you feel comfortable and safe. This will make it easier for you to relax into a natural pose rather than feeling like you need to constantly work at looking relaxed and in control of your surroundings – which could lead to stiff poses or forced smiles! In the studio, try to choose a private studio where you do not have a strangers watching you on the first day of your new modelling career. Our Dallas Photography Studio is exactly that. A private studio, that is by appointment only, for exactly those reasons.
  3. Take breaks when needed. Don’t be afraid to take breaks if you need them! Taking regular breaks will help keep everyone energized throughout the shoot. Plus, this gives your photographer time to review what they’ve captured so far and adjust lighting or angles as needed. In our studio we also have a live display where you can see the shoots in the middle of the shoot. Taking a break and taking a look can give you invaluable feedback on what is going well and what can be improved. We often do this with our clients and it insures that you will get images that you will be happy with.
  4. Practice poses ahead of time. Looking through magazines or online galleries can help give you an idea of what poses look best on camera, so practice those poses before the photoshoot begins! Practice in front of a mirror and find out what works best for your body type and facial features – this will help make posing easier during the actual shoot because most poses won’t come naturally at first!
  5. Trust your photographer’s judgement. Remember that your photographer has experience working with people in front of the camera, so trust their judgement on how best to pose or move during the session! They may suggest different poses than what you had expected, but try them out – they could end up being some of your favorite shots from the session!

Feeling uncomfortable in front of a professional photographer is totally normal – but there are things that can help make it easier! From getting to know your photographer beforehand, choosing a relaxing location, taking breaks when needed, practicing ahead of time, and trusting their judgement- these five tips are surefire ways for anyone looking for a photographer to feel comfortable in front of the camera!  With these tips on hand, anyone can easily walk into their photoshoot feeling confident knowing that beautiful photographs await them after it’s all said and done!
